Karen Smith, MS, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who received her Bachelor of Arts in communicative disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master of Arts in communicative disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She worked at a subacute rehab facility for people with traumatic brain injuries in Wis. before moving to Portland in 2001.

Karen has worked for Providence Outpatient Rehabilitation since her move to Portland and joined the ALS team in 2005.

Karen has expertise in working with patients who have complex swallowing and/or communication needs such as aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia of speech, primary progressive aphasia as a result of neurological conditions such as ALS, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries. She specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
