Biography & Education

R. Bryan Bell, M.D., DDS, FACS, is a Texas native with special expertise in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck area. His practice includes treating tumors of the oral cavity (mouth), pharynx (throat), sinuses, orbit, skull base and salivary glands as well as tumors of the skin, soft tissues and bones.

Dr. Bell is the medical director of Providence Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Program at Providence Cancer Center. The program's multidisciplinary team of more than 20 specialists includes head and neck surgeons, otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, reconstructive microvascular surgeons, oral pathologists, and dentists.

Members of the team work together to develop treatment plans for each of our head and neck cancer patients that incorporate the latest technology and most advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery, laser surgery, robotic surgery, 3-D computer planning with intraoperative navigation and nonsurgical cancer therapies.

Dr. Bell's clinical interests are focused on head and neck oncologic surgery and reconstructive cranio-maxillofacial surgery, with a particular emphasis on oral and oropharyngeal tumors, orbital surgery and skull base surgery.

He has pioneered technological advances in the field of 3-D computer planning and intraoperative guidance to achieve optimal oncologic and reconstructive outcomes. He is one of the few U.S. surgeons with extensive experience with sentinel lymph node biopsy for oral cancer, and was among the first surgeons on the west coast to perform transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for head and neck cancer.

Dr. Bell's current research endeavors are focused on a collaboration with translational immunologists at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute in the Providence Cancer Center to develop innovative treatment strategies that trigger the immune system to fight oral, head and neck cancer.

Dr. Bell has lectured extensively to national and international audiences and his work has been published in more than 100 scientific articles and textbook chapters. He has received numerous honors and has been chosen by his peers as one of Portland Monthly magazine's best head and neck/oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
