Providence Digestive Health Institute provides highly specialized diagnostics, management and treatment for the full range of conditions affecting the liver and pancreas.

Liver disease

Nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population has some form of chronic liver disease. In Oregon, patients of the Digestive Health Institute have access to the first NCQA-certified patient-centered specialty practice for liver disease in the country.

In The Liver and Liver Cancer Clinics, more than 100 physicians, surgeons, radiologists and oncologists collaborate to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services. Patients receive support from an outstanding team of pharmacy, social service, mental health and nutrition providers. Housing is available for those traveling from out of town.

Specialized areas of expertise include:

  • Viral hepatitis
  • Fatty liver and metabolic diseases
  • Advanced liver disease and its complications
  • Liver tumors, benign and malignant

Pancreatic disease

Managing pancreatic disease is challenging and requires a multi-disciplinary approach, particularly when patients have other underlying medical issues or circumstances that complicate their course and treatment. The Digestive Health Institute team makes every effort to connect patients with appropriate, helpful services – such as nurse navigators, dietitians and social workers – to improve their likelihood of a successful outcome. Our specialty trained gastroenterologists, surgeons, and diagnostic and interventional radiologists have extensive experience in the range of severity of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and their complications. A multidisciplinary conference convenes weekly to assess and recommend actions for pancreatic lesions, both benign and malignant. Percutaneous, endoscopic and surgical interventions for chronic pancreatic pain or obstruction are also available.

Specialized areas of expertise include:

  • Medical and surgical intensive care
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Pseudocyst aspiration and percutaneous drainage
  • Endoscopic cyst gastrostomy and debridement
  • Surgical pancreatectomy and Whipple procedures
  • Endoscopic removal of pancreatic stones or relief of obstruction

Cancers and pre-cancerous conditions

We partner with our colleagues at Providence Cancer Institute to provide comprehensive, leading-edge care for patients with liver cancer and pancreatic cancer. At our weekly liver and pancreas meetings, more than 20 specialists – including GI physicians, surgeons, medical oncologists, interventional radiologists and members of our cancer research teams – gather to discuss cases, develop consensus treatment plans and get patients into the most appropriate therapies as quickly as possible. Communication and collaboration between the GI team and the cancer team continues through every step of a patient’s care.
