From Detached Concern to Empathy: Humanizing Medical Practice

Clinical empathy is central to providing effective and ethical medical care. Evidence shows specific components of clinical empathy improves patient satisfaction and medical care. Dr. Halpern will analyze a case which resulted in abandonment of a patient under the guise of respecting autonomy. She will re-frame the core of empathy as engaged curiosity and cover specific skills to manage anxiety and restore empathic communication.
