Providence Heart Institute receives $2 million gift from Mary and Tim Boyle

Providence Foundations of Oregon announced today a $2 million gift from Columbia Sportswear President and CEO Tim Boyle and his wife, Mary, to Providence Heart Institute, Oregon’s leading provider of cardiac care.
The gift in support of Providence Heart Institute’s “We Love That!” campaign, will fund the establishment of the Center for Cardiovascular Analytics, Research and Data Science, or CARDS. Providence Heart Institute has long been a leader in analyzing cardiac data to drive improved clinical care. With this gift, Providence Heart Institute will create one of the few fully dedicated cardiac outcomes research centers in the country.
“We are grateful for this remarkable gift, which continues the Boyle family’s lifelong legacy of philanthropy to the Portland community, as well as their commitment to improving people’s lives,” said Dave Underriner, chief executive Providence Health & Services, Oregon.
“Gifts such as this allow us to continue providing the most innovative and comprehensive cardiac care in Oregon while growing as a global leader in heart data outcomes research.”
The center will support cardiovascular outcomes research to evaluate the treatments, technologies, and public policies that lead to the best patient outcomes and create the highest value in cardiac care.
The Boyle family experienced the devastating impact of cardiovascular disease first hand when Tim Boyle’s father, Neal Boyle, died from a sudden heart attack in 1970 at age 47. Tim and Mary see the potential in using cardiovascular outcomes research to create real personalized cardiac care out of these vast databases.
Tim noted, “Mary and I are thrilled to provide support for Providence St. Vincent’s cardiovascular research efforts and look forward to seeing the impact of these efforts for the people of Oregon and beyond.”

“Given our existing expertise in the area of outcomes research, the Boyles have provided us with a tremendous opportunity to advance this work. While there will always be new discoveries and technologies, one of our greatest opportunities is to understand how to apply our existing treatments to more patients in the most effective way. We also are thrilled that Dr. Ty Gluckman, a national leader in this field, has agreed to become the medical director of our new center.”
