Leadership Changes For Residency Program at Providence Portland Medical Center

May 23, 2016

An increased focus on compassionate care work means the long-term program director of Providence Portland Medical Center’s internal medicine residency program will step aside, bringing new, but well-known, leadership to the group.

Mari Kai, M.D.. will take on the role of director for Providence Portland Medical Center Graduate Medical Education Program for more than 30 interns and residents, replacing Mark Rosenberg, M.D. Dr. Kai has practiced at Providence Medical Group Northeast and been a member of the program faculty since 1999, serving as medical director for the last 10 years.

“I’m really excited and honored to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Rosenberg,” said Dr. Kai. “I’ve come to realize that the PPMC internal medicine residency is truly a special program.  My hopes are to build on the strong foundations of our past, and grow and innovate the program to train the highest quality physicians and people.”

After guiding interns and residents since 1981, Dr. Rosenberg is changing direction slightly. He will focus on expanding his work with the Compassion Program throughout all of Providence Health & Services. The Compassion Program seeks to engage all caregivers in the highest level of compassionate care for patients and each other.

In addition, Dr. Rosenberg will remain an active faculty member with lectures, clinical activity and precepting of residents.

“Being involved in residency education at PPMC has been a tremendous honor for me,” said Dr. Rosenberg. “It is a deep privilege and pleasure to see how our residents and our alumni contribute to the health of their patients and of our community. Under the leadership of Dr. Kai, in partnership with our wonderful faculty, the residency is positioned to continue to educate fantastic physicians and to be a national leader in graduate medical education.”

“Dr. Rosenberg developed an outstanding and innovative training program that rivals any in the country and we are thrilled he will continue to play an active role in the department,” said John Mastronarde, M.D., Garnjobst Chair of Graduate Medical Education, Providence Portland Medical Center.

With Dr. Kai moving into the role of program manager, Brinton Clark, M.D., has been named medical director of Providence Medical Group Northeast. Dr. Clark has served at the clinic and been a member of the faculty since 2005.
