Nationally recognized ultramarathoner to kick off Providence Heart to Start program

November 06, 2015

The ultramarathoner who’s captured national media attention with her inspirational message that you don’t have to be skinny to be fit will kick off the fourth season of Providence Heart to Start.

Mirna Valerio will share her message of wellness based on determination and acceptance of body size to this special event designed to inform the public about Providence’s free “couch to 5K” training program.

Mirna Valerio, whose message about being active at any size has been featured on NBC Nightly News, The Wall Street Journal and Runner’s World, to name a few, will share stories about her wellness journey as Providence kicks off the fourth annual Heart to Start training program. The community is invited to attend this special event designed to inform people about the free “couch to 5K” style program.

Since 2012, Heart to Start has brought people together during the darkest, rainiest months of the year to set new goals, support and inspire each other. While the program is a 13-week plan to prepare participants for a 5K, the ultimate goal of Providence Heart to Start is to reframe exercise to be about health, happiness and hope.

Dr. James Beckerman, cardiologist with Providence Heart and Vascular Institute and creator and author of the Heart to Start program and book, will join special guest Mirna Valerio at the kick-off event. Join the Facebook community and RSVP for the special event.

Kick off event:

6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11

Providence Park, KeyBank Club (Entrance through the Providence Sports Care Center)
909 SW 18th Ave
Portland, Ore.
