June Olson, M.D., regional medical director, Oregon Laboratories and Pathology
The Providence Pathology group in Oregon is composed of 25 Providence-employed pathologists and a Ph.D. clinical chemist. Together they support a subspecialty-based department that now includes a board-certified pediatric pathologist and a board-certified neuropathologist.
William Ryan, M.D., is the only board-certified pediatric pathologist in Oregon. He did his undergraduate work at USC in the Marshall School of Business and worked for eight years in the financial arena before attending George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He interned at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, finishing his residency at UC San Diego. Dr. Ryan then completed a fellowship in pediatric pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children's Hospital.
Vassil Kaimaktchiev, M.D., better known as Dr. Vasco, is a board-certified neuropathologist. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University in Sofia, Bulgaria. He did his residency and a two-year fellowship in neuropathology at Oregon Health & Science University. He then accepted a medical directorship in the Columbia River Gorge and served as Wasco County Medical Examiner for seven years. He is medical director of Providence Hood River Laboratory. He has authored 12 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Ryan and Dr. Vasco will not only help support the service needs of our Oregon region but, given the limited number of pathologists with these credentials, they will also support our sister regions in a consultative manner, using traditional slide review as well as telemedicine technology.
