Study of Systemic and Bone Marrow Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cells (MDSC) and the tumor microenvironment in Patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

This prospective biospecimen collection study will enroll patients undergoing peripheral blood testing and or bone marrow biopsy for known or suspected MDS. If a patient undergoing bone marrow biopsy is determined not to have MDS they may serve as a control sample, if they have a non malignant disease. Control samples include patients with non malignant diseases (anemia, ITP), or malignant lymphoma undergoing bone marrow biopsy, or peripheral blood collection. Normal volunteers will be consented using the PH&S IRB # 06-108 “Healthy Volunter” consent form as controls for peripheral blood samples only. Biospecimens collected from MDS patients will include additional slides from bone marrow biopsy and fresh peripheral whole blood, and bone marrow aspirate samples.
