Biography & Education

Biography
Kristin Stevens, M.D., Ph.D., feels her most important role as a physician is to be a source of education, motivation and reassurance for her patients.

"Dermatology is a very visual specialty, and patients tend to be more concerned about a condition that they or others can see, even though the condition itself may not be harmful," she explains. "I enjoy taking the time to listen to my patients' concerns and encourage them to take an active role in their own care."

After graduating summa cum laude from the University of New Mexico with a degree in biochemistry, Dr. Stevens earned a Ph.D. in immunology before completing her medical degree cum laude at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Following her internship year at Baylor, she completed her dermatology residency at the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, serving as chief resident during her final year.

Dr. Stevens is board certified in dermatology. She joined Providence Medical Group in 2003 and has been the Medical Director of PMG Dermatology since 2007. She is active in the local dermatology community, participating regularly in a journal club with her peers. She has served as both Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Oregon Dermatology Society, and volunteers as a clinical assistant professor at the Oregon Health & Science University Department of Dermatology.

Dr. Stevens has been listed as one of the Top Doctors in Dermatology by Portland Monthly magazine and has appeared on AM Northwest and other local news programs to talk about skin cancer, sun safety and skin care.

In her free time, Dr. Stevens enjoys running, swimming, gardening, reading and travel. She lives with her husband, daughter and son, as well as four tuxedo cats and a Greater Swiss Mountain dog. She is an active participant in the National Charity League Oregon Rose chapter and works regularly with several local non-profit philanthropies throughout the Portland area.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

I have to issue with this care provider. I've given some so-so responses to the receptionist staff. the receptionist I worked with directly was professional and kind. while waiting to see my doctor, I was able to make some observations that were a bit unsettling for me. one receptionist just wasn't warm or welcoming. The attitude I witnessed was that she really didn't want to be there. It's just a job for her. another very unsettling observation made was each time a staff person came out to call a patient. no one was cheery or welcoming. they simply called the name. No smile. No "how are you"? Iin one instance, an older gentlemen patient was called. He acknowledge the staff member with a jolly greeting and her response was dull and stale. I was a bit taken aback by it. very disappointing. My care provider, however, was wonderful. She's kind, she's interested and engaged.

I trust her, but the appointments are very fast. She interrupts when I start to tell a (short) anecdote about myself - which I am specifically doing so that she gets to know me better as a patient and a human who is in her care. I also do so as a way to (attempt to) dispel anxiety.

She is always very considerate to my needs and listens to what I'm concerned about. I've been a patient of hers for over 10 years, and when she moved her office location from NE Portland to Beaverton, I still make the long drive to see her.

My visit this time was unsatisfactory. I waited 30 minutes before asking how much longer. The receptionist then came out to let me know the doctor was delayed. waited 15 more minutes then called the office from the waiting room as the receptionist was busy. it was then I was called to exam room. I was told by assistant that people like me wanting more than appointment was made for was why they were running behind. when the doctor came in she did do a very thorough exam. by then I just wanted out to go home.

She was very presentable and love her outfit! She said she was to have one of her team to give me a quote from the insurance on the special procedure that I have asked. The clinic must have forgotten to follow up with me. I have not heard from the office of Dr. Stevens since I was there [...].

While most of the staff was great, I did have issues with the medical assistants. One assistant knocked then walked in the room to obtain a bottle of Nitrous while I was waiting for the doctor. No "excuse me" or anything. Then after the doctor left the room and I was redressing the same medical assistant again knocked and walked right in, even though I asked her to wait. I was in my underwear. just set down my AVS then left. I waited for the other med. assistant to return to the room as I had been informed by the doctor she would go over my after care instructions and the recommendations for OTC creams but she never returned. I got up and left after 15 minutes of waiting. Both MA's were sitting at their desks, briefly looked up and said 'yup, you can go'. I felt rather rudely dismissed.

This physician is always professional and provides good care. I come approximately every year for a mole check [...]. My only comment is that the physician ran 45 minutes late --this was not a big deal as I was not working and didn't have any prior commitments, but it would have been ideal if someone had poked their head in and let me know.

02/22/2017
Making this 15 minute appointment was too complicated. I am an existing patient, called in the morning, and after waiting a while on the phone, the person who answered passed me back to someone else who answered and said someone would need to call be back for this appt. i did not get a call back untill the next day. At appt. waited at least 30 minutes after my scheduled time. [...]

I let the provider know that I could feel pain when she was taking the biopsy. she said no, you should be numb. Then when she was cauterizing, I was flinching and said that hurts. she said almost done. Then stated something about me having some red hair, and the numbing was warring off fast.
100

11/14/2016
My only negative thoughts about this appointment is that I had to make it 5 months in advance. Meanwhile, I went elsewhere to take care of the immediate problem that was of concern at the time I made the appointment.

I really like Dr. Stevens, but I had to make my appointment three months in advance. I also feel like I talked to the nurse more than I talked to my provider.
