Biography & Education

Susan Payne, M.D., believes that establishing a caring and trusting relationship with her patients is her most important role as a primary care provider. “It’s not enough to deliver quality care in and of itself,” she says. “By taking the time to listen and educate my patients, they understand that I care about them receiving the best possible medical advice and attention.”

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Payne earned her medical degree at the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center and for five years was a member of the clinical faculty at Stanford University’s School of Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif.

Outside of the office, Dr. Payne enjoys time with her husband, a real estate investment advisor, and their two daughters. She also enjoys long-distance cycling, running and alpine skiing or curling up with a good novel.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

Receptionists seemed a little less enthusiastic about helping me when I walked in.

Dr. was late due to surgery-not a problem.

I love Dr. Payne. She is the only reason I put up with the office. Scheduling is horrible. The calendar only available 1-2 mo. in advance is so difficult. She is consistently 1 hour behind schedule. My apt was at 2:15pm. I didn't see the doc until after 3:30. I under ten emergencies happen, but this isn't the first time my appt was so late. It is totally disrespectful of your patients.

waited a little over an hour without anyone coming to update me. Not knowing when I would see the doctor, I left.

Dr. Payne is the BEST

Love love LOVE Dr. Payne - one of the very best doctors I've ever been taken care of by.

I thought Dr. Payne was excellent. She acted as if she had all the time in the world to discuss my medical issues.

Once was left in the doctors office 20 min. after visit b/c nurse forgot to bring in my paperwork.

Dr. Payne has been outstanding!

Dr Payne is an amazing physician. I have been her patient for 16 years. She always educates, takes her time, shows compassion, and listens to all of my concerns with great care.

Dr. Payne is thoughtful, kind, and is one of the best physicians I've ever encountered. It's rare to find such a dedicated person in any field these days, but I feel fortunate to have her as one of my physicians.

I feel the service provider lack human touch. [...]

Dr. Payne and the staff at Columbia Women's clinic are wonderful!!

Dr. Payne is the best incarnation of the typically nurturing women's health provider. She listens carefully to my concerns and provides not only great medical advice, but also support for my broader life concerns--job stress, family stress, and the like. She is not imperious with her advice, but starts a broader conversation. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I went to see her, and I looked forward to my second visit. Dr. Payne has the rare gift of being both an excellent doctor and an incredible human being.

I think ,Dr. Payne is a amazing Doctor kind listens to my concerns.

[...] She seems very caring. Scheduling appointments with this provider has been somewhat difficult. [...]

I didn't see the doctor for more than an hour after my scheduled appointment. Maybe there was an emergency that I did not know about.

Dr. Payne, her medical assistant and receptionist were all very kind, caring and very good communicators. I have seen Dr. Payne a few times and she always spends as much time as needed, never makes you feel rushed, communicates very well, takes time to explain procedures, etc. She is awesome!

I have known Dr. Payne since 2002 when she discovered my mother's [...] cancer after several PCPs and oncologists failed to do so. Dr. Payne is the epitome of a knowledgeable, competent, thorough, caring, physician. She is very easy to talk to, she listens to her patients, and she explains everything that she does. I can't say enough good things about her. I always recommend her to anyone seeking a gynecologist, as well as to students looking to go into medicine.
