Biography & Education

Susan Payne, M.D., believes that establishing a caring and trusting relationship with her patients is her most important role as a primary care provider. “It’s not enough to deliver quality care in and of itself,” she says. “By taking the time to listen and educate my patients, they understand that I care about them receiving the best possible medical advice and attention.”

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Payne earned her medical degree at the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center and for five years was a member of the clinical faculty at Stanford University’s School of Medicine in Palo Alto, Calif.

Outside of the office, Dr. Payne enjoys time with her husband, a real estate investment advisor, and their two daughters. She also enjoys long-distance cycling, running and alpine skiing or curling up with a good novel.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

dr Susan Payne is an outstanding provider. I was just blown away by her depth of knowledge, compassion, understanding, and care. she is fantastic

I arrived at 10:40AM for an 11AM appointment. I was taken to the room at 11:15. Provider did not arrive until after noon(without explanation). This was particularly stressful for my personality type, and expectations of returning to work in a timely fashion.

Highly recommend Dr. Payne. She was very thorough on her examinations and listened to my concerns & needs.

Dr. Payne took the time to listen to me & understand my symptoms even though they were embarrassing to discuss.

Dr. Payne is incredible- love her proactive, informative care and style. She is excellent and very attuned to women's care and needs.

Dr Payne is the best. She listens well, she takes her time with her patients and gives them the attention they need. I always feel heard when I have issues to discuss. She answers questions well and never makes me feel rushed.

Dr Payne, Is an amazing Dr and person! She is very easy to talk to and makes the experience so comfortable.

Dr. Payne is an excellent physician. she takes her time, is compassionate and very knowledgeable. I feel that she always has my best interests in the forefront of her care for me. I trust her 100%!

My only issue was with the medical assistant taking down history incorrectly and my having to repeat and clarify multiple times. I hope my history is accurately recorded.

each individual at the office was incredibly courteous thoughtful respectful and caring

Dr. Payne has been my gynecologist for 19 years. She is the best doctor I've ever had and thoroughly addresses all my women's health issues. Through her medical competency and bedside manner I trust her completely. completely

Dr. Payne is the greatest! A C-section of hers was pushed back and so I was actually brought in to my appt early, which worked out since I arrived to the office early. But due to her squeezing me in, as it were, I felt minimally rushed with this appt -- she was clearly a bit distracted -- but honestly, it was preferable to my own appt being pushed back, had I had to wait if her C-section had gone at its regularly scheduled time. Even despite her schedule being rearranged, she was mostly quite attentive to my needs and her bedside manner is always top notch.

Dr Payne is an amazing, knowledgeable, doctor with the best bed side manner I've ever experienced. Her kindness and compassion made a difficult situation much easier. I would recommend her to every woman I know and I feel the manner in which I ended up being her patient was truly a blessing.

I would recommend Dr Payne to all of my friends. The front office, not so much. This appointment was a reschedule from one that was scheduled 6 months in advance. When I arrived for the first appointment, after waiting 45 minutes I asked how much longer it would be. Was told there were 2 more patients waiting to be seen ahead of me and they were 30 minutes each. WHAT? I am not waiting for 2 hours to just get into a waiting room. So, I couldn't be rescheduled for 3 more months. This appointment wait time was much better but the receptionists still don't smile, look at you or hardly acknowledge you. Let alone give you an idea of the wait time.

Dr. Payne is a very knowledgeable physician that extends to compassion & care for her patients.

My care provider is on top of thing when I was in medical situation. She provided very detail information for me so that I can fully understand my health situation. She is very reliable and care for her patients. I would definite recommend her to friends and family.

I was late to my apt and the still got me in rather quickly. I had never seen driving payn before though she made me feel really comfurtable right off . she was very thorough and set all of my consurns at ese. I look forward to seeing she for all my medical needs

Provider very knowledgeable and explains things well. Great attitude, you can definitely tell she cares about her work and her patients. Visit felt rushed and wait time was too long (45 minutes). Otherwise, very pleased with doctor and staff.

Dr. Susan Payne is an excellent doctor. She listens carefully and is very respectful of my time. It's really hard to get an appointment to see her but it's worth it. She is beyond amazing.

dr is the best ever. her team is great as well. I just love them all, they are very nice to me.

Dr. Payne is wonderful, she takes time with you to help you and gives you many choices in the treatment of your health

Waiting times has just been too long each visit. But she is excellent/caring/loving or wonderful OB-GYN - I love her!

It took me a very long time to get an appointment with my regular provider knowing I had complicated issues that required a visit with an MD, my provider was called away to an emergency surgery which I understood, but this required me coming back for another appointment with my provider, who fortunately had an opening in the same week, but, I then I had to take more time off of work to attend the appointment, and am still waiting to receive a referral to a higher level of care with a specialist, which I knew I needed months ago. I feel your clinic does not have the resources available for women of my age who, because they are not having a baby do not get access to a MD in a timely manner.

The nurse [...] understood my situation and understood the questions I asked. I was given help same day almost every time.Dr Susan Payne is by far one of the best providers I've ever had. She truly cared about my situation, and gave me important information as soon as possible. I was not seeing her for the happiest of reasons, and she made me feel very cared for and involved in every stage of my care. Thank you both.

My provider was late (out of her control) & helped me get into an appointment quickly & nicely.

Able to recall history quickly & thorough explanations. Continues to share the plan & progression of our pregnancy.

Receptionists seemed a little less enthusiastic about helping me when I walked in.

Dr. was late due to surgery-not a problem.
