Biography & Education

Biography
Dr. Newell grew up in the Sonoran Desert. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in Anthropology and Sociology. She lived in Senegal, West Africa, for one year during college, and returned there as a Fulbright Scholar after graduating from college. She returned to her home town of Tucson, AZ for medical school, but then in 2003 ventured to New York City for her Residency in General Surgery. There she was introduced to the world of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): the neighborhood around her hospital, Spanish Harlem, touted the highest Hepatitis C seropositivity rates in the nation. Because she found the clinical aspects of caring for patients with HCC so fascinating, Pippa elected to spend two years in a basic science lab in the Division of Liver Diseases, mentored by hepatologists Scott Friedman and Josep Llovet.

In 2010, she moved to Portland to begin a Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Fellowship at Providence Portland Medical Center. During her second year of fellowship, she worked in the tumor immunology lab at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, and began work on the projects that she now continues part time as a Clinical Research Scientist at the Providence Cancer Center. The majority of her time will be spent in clinical practice caring for patients with HCC, and she sees patients at the Liver Cancer Clinic at Providence Portland and Providence St. Vincent.
