Biography

Dr. Alison Mitchell became a family physician because she loves taking care of patients at every stage of their lives, from newborn to seniors, with a special emphasis on maternal and child health. "I value getting to know my patient's and their families," she says. "How many specialties allow you to care for several generations of one family? It's a privilege."

With an emphasis on prevention, Dr. Mitchell helps her patients make small changes that can have a big impact on their health. "My role is to help people learn how to stay healthy, but also teach them how to live well while managing a chronic illness such as diabetes."

After earning her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Mitchell completed her residency at San Jose Hospital Family Practice Program, an affiliate of Stanford University.

She enjoys cooking, hiking with her dog and traveling. She speaks both Spanish and English.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

She tends to chart some things that aren't entirely accurate. For instance, patient has a family history of...this, but its actually something different. Possible reason for inaccuraies is that she does not chart in room and sometimes doesn't even log into Epic during visit.

I had a fall in my home [...], told my provider of lack of strength and was hoping to get a referral back to physical therapy but didn't get one. I'll be sending a note to provider this week to see about returning to therapy. I do have nephropathy in my feet, and do have balance issues. Hopefully therapy can assist me in those areas.

This provider knows and understands me both physically and emotionally. In fact I would be devastated if she were to retire.

I don't think any person whom the provider agrees is in "chronic pain" should not be offered help for said pain. physical therapy, pain contract, anything, but this provider did absolutely nothing. Not even when I specifically asked for help getting the pain under control.

The entire experience of making this appointment and the appointment itself was highly disappointing. This was an annual visit following my re-employment [...] after a year away at school; in essence, I rarely see a doctor- this appointment was important to me. I initially scheduled an appointment via MyChart in February of this year; I received a phone message about a week later from the office telling me I had the wrong insurance (records still showed that I had [...]) and that my appointment was canceled until I got my insurance sorted out. I had no opportunity to discuss the fact that I currently have [...], just an executive decision to cancel an appointment against my will. When I called back, no one apologized but was told I could still get in for that day, it would just be a different time. Two weeks later, the office called again and said I'd have to reschedule because the physician was "out of the office". So I rescheduled for a week later. Four weeks after my initial attempt to get in, I arrive for this appointment [...]. Firstly, I feel that my primary concern of chronic back pain was not addressed or regarded as significant. I was not offered a referral to anyone that may be able to help, nor was I given an opportunity to discuss the impact of this medical issue on my functioning or how I might go about treating it. Additionally, (and this is the real kicker) an albeit minor but necessary treatment/procedure was not done during this visit because the provider did not want to "make her medical assistant cry" by asking her to do a procedure on a Friday afternoon before her weekend (I happened to be the last appointment on a Friday afternoon). This is offensive and unacceptable to me. I work 10 hour night shifts at a hospital and it's difficult for me to make it to appointments during office hours. I actually woke early on this afternoon to make it to this appointment, therefore, my time is important to me and I shouldn't be treated any differently because I was the last appointment of the day. In fact, I am already uncomfortable going to doctors based on past bad experiences and I feel further embarrassed and disrespected by this particular appointment and visit. [...]

Dr. Mitchell always takes time to listen to me and responds to my questions. She sometimes takes me to task because, as a retired nurse, I don't always follow instructions exactly.

Dr. Mitchell did an excellent job of diagnosing a new problem I had, and filling my prescriptions I needed, in a twenty minute appointment. She consulted my medical records to help her make the diagnosis. She listens carefully and respectfully, and answers all of my questions thoroughly, and in a way I can understand.

discussed new script needed, made apt for follow up, dr walked out and immediately back in with visit notes. then left, I figured I was supposed to leave too. then when I was at home, realized I did not get my written prescription to fill at pharmacy. I had to send email and got a call back that I can pick it up from front desk.

Dr Mitchell was 10 minutes late for a 20 minute appointment. It would've been nice if the MA could've notified me.
10

12/06/2016
The MA took 20 minutes of my 1/2 hr visit listing all my vitamins in the computer in the room with me rather than doing this at her desk. the provider ended up with 5 mins face-to-face with me and kept saying over and over again "I only have 5 mins! I have to go to lunch! I have a meeting in 5 mins! what was that MA doing in here?!" My issues were not addressed adequately and I was very emotionally upset during the visit which the provider discounted. The provider told me I needed to lose weight in a not so nice way, but didn't give me any resources or help in how to do this given my health condition. She also did not examine me although I noticed in my health record that she documented doing an exam w/me. [...] All-in-all, very very poor patient care in my opinion.

12/04/2016
If I can explain my health needs to her, I know she can help me.
50

11/23/2016
I feel like my provider makes up her own opinion of how things are without considering each situation as its own recorse which makes it personal for each patient and when she makes her own assumptions about what she assumes or catorgorizes the needs of the problem into group response without taking the time to listen to what I as a client have to say or my opinion about how things are going as far as my health needs. I believe due to this way of thinking it closes the mind to any outside interest or other solutions to the problem at hand medically speaking it doesn't leave a lot of room for the practice of medicine as the teachable aspect has become a group catorgorized solution of one persons opinion or suggestion.

The intake clerk seemed a bit confused,(or perhaps new). she seemed unfamiliar with me. I have been a patient at the clinic for 20+ years. Moreover, she was unfamiliar with my insurance company company and made several negative comments about it. I have [...] as well as a full coverage supplemental insurance.
