Biography & Education

Biography

Dr. Alison Mitchell became a family physician because she loves taking care of patients at every stage of their lives, from newborn to seniors, with a special emphasis on maternal and child health. "I value getting to know my patient's and their families," she says. "How many specialties allow you to care for several generations of one family? It's a privilege."

With an emphasis on prevention, Dr. Mitchell helps her patients make small changes that can have a big impact on their health. "My role is to help people learn how to stay healthy, but also teach them how to live well while managing a chronic illness such as diabetes."

After earning her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Mitchell completed her residency at San Jose Hospital Family Practice Program, an affiliate of Stanford University.

She enjoys cooking, hiking with her dog and traveling. She speaks both Spanish and English.

About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

I feel that Dr. Mitchell cares about and advocates for me as her patient. I am involved with a specialist also, but was not getting a response on some important pre-surgery information and Dr. Mitchell stepped in and advocated on my behalf and got the necessary information. Her making this extra effort was wonderful, a big relief to me and most appreciated.

I have an ongoing condition, Dr. Mitchell had checked my chart, so she was aware of what I asked her. She listened and ordered tests to see how far the condition had advanced in the last year. As soon as she got the results she passed them to me, and offered to refer me to a specialist.

I felt a bit rushed. There was an appointment that ran late before mine, so my appointment was late. Perhaps this is why there was a sense of haste during my appointment. I brought up a health concern, and it was brushed over. I was hoping to get some direction on how to proceed, but the focus was only on the specific reason I was there. I honestly think I don't connect with my doctor. I've never felt like going back to her, it was just easier to go back to her. Probably won't again.

I always receive excellent care from my primary care physician. However, I received only minimal care from Dr. Mitchell. I came in with a double spider bite on the side of my left breast with a red and painful area around 2.5 inches across. Dr. M prescribed an over the counter hydrocortisone cream. I explained to her that last summer I had two of these spider bites with a spreading rash that increased in size to 6 inches. She did not give me a Rx for an antibiotic should this problem develop as it had last summer. Within 2 days, I had to go to an urgent care center for an Rx of cephalexin because the rash had spread to 5.5 inches. The area is now diminishing to no rash and regular scabbing.
