Biography

Dr. Alison Mitchell became a family physician because she loves taking care of patients at every stage of their lives, from newborn to seniors, with a special emphasis on maternal and child health. "I value getting to know my patient's and their families," she says. "How many specialties allow you to care for several generations of one family? It's a privilege."

With an emphasis on prevention, Dr. Mitchell helps her patients make small changes that can have a big impact on their health. "My role is to help people learn how to stay healthy, but also teach them how to live well while managing a chronic illness such as diabetes."

After earning her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Mitchell completed her residency at San Jose Hospital Family Practice Program, an affiliate of Stanford University.

She enjoys cooking, hiking with her dog and traveling. She speaks both Spanish and English.

About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

I never felt HEARD by Dr Mitchell. I feel somehow guilty in her presence, and that my health concerns were not received as seriously as I needed. mostly I think our personalities don't mesh well.

Dr. Mitchell treated me like a patient and a peer, who has some knowledge of medical and social issues. She did not talk down to me, showed a good knowledge of mental and physical health issues I was bringing to the table, and up-to-date information on nutrition and allied health care. I was very impressed.

I felt like my doctor had a preconceived idea about what was going on with my health but she did not ask about details or information from me. I felt like she quickly determined that medication was the right plan without considering what else might be going on or what other plans might be.

We got off to a slightly rocky start, due in part to my chronic medical issues. Once Dr. Mitchel had the opportunity to see me on a good day, rather than consistently on days that were difficult for me; she immediately understood where I was coming from. Now, I feel she is a great fit as my primary care, who assists me in coordinating appointments with specialist for my chronic illness.

Dr. Mitchell is an amazing provider and an asset to the Providence family. I think the chronic change over in the front office staff makes countinuity of care a slight issue. Otherwise, I would never consider going to see any other Doctor!

I felt she was condescending. I obviously know I am overweight and she kept repeating over and over that I need to stretch and get active. She did not even consider helping me figure out a way to help my back and hip pain (ie: chiropractics or massage) aside from stretching it.

Dr Mitchell was short with me during this visit. She told me I was "unloading a lot on her on a Friday afternoon," and made me feel truly mortified about my financial issues when I told her I could not make more frequent appointments. She visibly lost composure and showed frustration with me when I presented my issues. I will never step foot in her office again, my entire family will be changing to see a new physician.
