Biography & Education

Biography

Dr. Heh Shin Kwak emphasizes empowering her patients to take charge of their dermatology care, whether it’s educational information or the importance of sun protection. “What I enjoy most about being a dermatologist is seeing patients of all ages and especially entire families,” she says. “One of the most satisfying aspects of medicine is seeing multiple family members and being entrusted to their care.”

Dr. Kwak earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan as part of the Integrated Premedical-Medical Program, a rigorous 8-year program which accepted a small number of high school students nationally with early admittance into medical school. During medical school, she completed an NIH research fellowship in dermatology with a focus on clinical trials and translational research.  Dr. Kwak then completed her dermatology training at Stanford University Medical Center, where she served as chief resident.  Dr. Kwak is board certified in dermatology.

In her free time, Dr. Kwak enjoys rock climbing, hiking, cooking and spending time with her husband, son, and daughter.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

This clinic reminded me of a factory-with a conveyer belt of clients- each getting 7 min of time. I do not fault the Dr. although I did not feel she showed concern, or communicated well- but clearly the process is to be in and out in 7 min. or less. I had to wait over 2 months for this appointment, and then got but the briefest moment of time with the Dr. Her overall skin check was not thorough, and her answer to a rash I have had for over 2 months was try this cream and if it doesn't clear up, come back in a month. She did not tell me what improvement I should expect, or when. I had to stop her exit to clarify her instructions. Not my normal wonderful Providence experience. Again, I doubt this is the Dr.'s fault- but the time the clinic allows per patient.

She was adorable! checked the areas for which I had concerns. Said all was well, no issues to be concerned about and I left!

[...] obtaining an expedient appointment with a dermatologist was difficult during the time my symptoms were more evident and intense. However, I was able to be seen earlier than originally scheduled by being on the cancellation list.

Took me several months to get an appointment with a dermatologist. When I finally got an appointment, it got rescheduled one month later with a different dermatologist due to an unexpected leave be the first dermatologist.

This was the provider's last day at her current location and she was clearly very busy. I feel she was quite harried with all the last day appointments and, thus, was somewhat hurried. She is an outstanding provider and I highly recommend her.

This was my first and only visit with Dr. Kwak, whom I liked a lot. The exam, unfortunately, resulted in a biopsy with a melanoma diagnosis. Dr. Kwak called me personally to carefully explain the results and the next steps before she sent me the lab results. I have transferred to Dr. [...] since Dr. Kwak is moving to another location and appreciate the office personnel's swift handling of this change.

Only saw her twice - now she's moving to another location that is not near me. I liked her very much.

The overall staff at this office was great and made me feel comfortable. However, my experience with Dr. Kwak was unfortunate. She came off as demeaning and rude and seemed not to be interested in the concerns I had about my skin. It was very off putting, unhelpful, and a waste of my time and money. As someone with chronic eczema, I'd hope she'd have been a bit more understanding of my condition (not to mention her overall good ratings on the providence site). However I did not find this to be the case and I will not be returning here.

I phoned for a follow-up question after the biopsy report was received, but Dr. Quak was too busy to call back. An "assistant" called back, but really wasn't able to answer my question.

contradicted statements and assessment of returning growth on left foot, acknowledged previous surgery and pathology report regarding growth due to presence of abnormal cells yet viewed and measured returning growth (same color, type, pproximately same size and near previous location) and recommended that I return in two years or earlier if visible change) acknowledged increased risk for having had abnormal cells in previous growth but didn't biopsy regrowth.

She is such a good doctor. Always aware of what's going on in my personal life and makes an effort to connect with me on a personal level during my full skin exam which takes some of the awkwardness out of it. My only complaint is that I didn't get a chance to talk to her about any new questions or concerns, though I think that's because this was a routine appointment for ongoing care, not a new appointment. I'm sure if I went in outside of my regularly scheduled/required follow ups she would be more curious and open to what's going on.

[...] My only complaint has more to do with my inability to have been able to get a quick enough appointment and also that in order to have seen within 30 days of trying to make an appointment, I had to go to a clinic that was an hour away from where I live. To get future appointments for this speciality clinic, I will also be required myself to request a transfer of care before I can be accepted to a clinic closer to where I live.

[...] when I asked for something to be done or looked into more (one which turned out to be skin cancer) I was made to feel I was being vain. Although vanity was a concern I was also concerned about cancer. The latest visit I wanted something removed that was bothering me. Again it could have been looked at as vain, but it was also irritating my skin. It was removed, but I was told she couldn't do things like that all the time. I go to the doctor for help. I cannot do these things to myself. I would not ask if it was not an issue. I think it boils down to insurance and what and why they cover things, but it's also the way it was said to me by my doctor. Overall my doctor is pretty nice and somewhat friendly and I have recommended her in the past. I just think a little more bedside manner is in order.

Waited 40 mins after my appointment time before I was seen by the doctor. After 25 mins of sitting in the waiting room, I had to ask the receptionist what was causing the delay. She went back and checked and informed me that there was an emergency with the patient before me and that it would be another 15 mins wait. The staff did apologize for the long wait but it would have been nice if the staff had come out earlier to inform me what was going on.

Dr Kwak was excellent. my only qualm was that I asked for a full body check for skin cancer which she did although her holding back the gallon in various places for modesty I feel like not everywhere was checked thoroughly. Also she did not check my scalp which I realized after I got home.
