Biography

Stanley Cohan, M.D., Ph.D., joined the medical staff of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in 2000 and opened what is now called Providence Multiple Sclerosis Center the following year. The center now cares for more than 700 patients from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Wyoming, California and Montana.

Dr. Cohan was a principal investigator in the Natalizumab trial and is the initiating, main investigator for BEST (Beta-interferon Early Steroid Trial). He is the founder of The Pacific Northwest Multiple Sclerosis Registry Project, which recently won a research grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Cohan earned medical and doctorate degrees at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and completed a residency in neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He later joined the Georgetown staff and was an investigator in the original, pivotal trial of beta interferon

About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments.

Dr. Cohan is probably one of the best Doctors I have had in my lifetime. He is the best Neurologist I have ever had and I'm sure will ever replace him. He is so caring and kind and takes away a lot of my anxiety when I go for my visits. I have recommended Dr. Cohan to everyone I meet that has MS.

My only complaint when seeing Dr Cohan is not with him himself but the fact that he is supposed to be running an MS center but they do not offer care from other specialists that are needed for MS patients such as Physiatrist, PT, OT, Psychologist. He did send me to PT upon my request but did not read the report that she sent him about my status which was disappointing. MS patients usually need several specialists and the Neurologist should be the one to coordinate that care and be aware of what is happening with each of these . I have to search for my own specialists and have them send him reports, but it would be nice if he could read them so I could feel that my team is working together with the common goal of keeping me as healthy as possible.

Dr. Cohan is incredibly helpful in my treatment of [...]. I am comfortable asking questions and he takes the time to respond with care and thoughtfulness. His exams are thorough and respectful. I trust him completely with his medical knowledge and understanding of my particular condition. He is like a "cheerleader" for my good health. He is also an advocate and spent a good deal of time years ago to write a detailed letter supporting my claims for disability insurance.
