Jefferson W. Chen, M.D., Ph.D., has been in Portland since 1999, having spent the previous five years as a faculty member in neurosurgery at the University of Texas medical branch in Galveston. He currently is in solo private practice with a focus in neurotrauma and neurocritical care, brain tumors and the surgical treatment of dementia. He has medical staff privileges at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and Providence Portland Medical Center.
Dr. Chen maintains an active research program studying the role of lysosomes and autophagy in head injury and brain tumors. He is a principal investigator in two international multicenter phase III clinical trials for traumatic brain injury and one mutlicenter phase III clinical trial for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme. He is a co-investigator in the phase III multicenter Avastin RTOG trial for glioblastoma multiforme. With the use of cerebral microdialysis, brain oxygenation monitors, and cerebral blood flow measurements, a better understanding of the brain chemistry changes is obtained in patients with traumatic brain injury or stroke. This will help in the development of paradigms to improve outcome from these devastating disorders.
Dr. Chen also has an active clinical and research program in normal pressure hydrocephalus. He has been working with neuroradiologists to develop better tools for the diagnosis. Translational studies are being done to examine the CSF from these patients for abnormal proteins that may lead to the clinical stigmata. He is the founder and director of the Northwest NPH support group.
