Biography & Education

Tom Chau, M.D., takes a collaborative approach to care. “As a partner in health, I will give my patients the best information and guidance I can,” he says. “At the same time, I ask my patients to be active participants in their own health.”

In his practice, he emphasizes wellness, healthy living and efficient care. “As health is the ultimate goal, I support the safe and prudent use of complementary and alternative therapies when medically appropriate.”

Dr. Chau received his medical degree from the University of Colorado in Denver. He completed his internship and residency at the University of California, San Diego, where he was elected chief resident. In addition, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado.

Dr. Chau was born in Taiwan and grew up in Boulder, Colo. He is an avid hiker, connoisseur of food and amateur chef of fusion cuisine.

Personal Statement: A music teacher once told me, "The mind is a sponge that can't absorb water if it's clenched too tight. It absorbs best when it's lightly supported." I think Providence St. Vincent is one of those rare places where people are supported to learn and be the best they can be.

Patient Ratings and Comments
About Our Survey

The Patient Rating score is based on responses given during the CAHPS Patient Experience Survey. Responses are measured on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the best score. These scores are then translated to a 5-point scale in order to display results in a 5-star rating. Comments are also gathered from the same survey and displayed in their entirety with the exception of any language that may be considered slander, libel or contain private health information, which will be removed prior to publishing the comments. These comments are the views and opinions of patients and are not endorsed by or necessarily reflect the views of Providence.

All good.

Sensitive visit to start with (breast) insensitivity made worse.

Dr Chau came in wearing a mask over his face with no explanation. [...] I felt he should have explained this to me because the mask often made it difficult for me to understand what he was saying

Dr. Chau has been MD for a long time. I always feel he addresses my concerns and treats when required. I use My Chart between visits. I always receive immediate feedback for my questions and problems.

Dr. Chau is a very good primary care provider. He gently, but persistently, nudges one in the direction of better health behaviors.

The student who came in and actually talked to me was so thoughtful & caring. The dr. himself was fine but terse & not much feeing. He was deferring more to her.

Extremely competent and caring in every aspect.

I am very happy with Providence

Dr Chau is very concerned and in tune with my medical condition. He is kind and caring.

Understanding,thoughtful and caring.

we communicate a lot on my chart. Dr. Chau responds promptly. I've never had negative experience with doctor. He the best PCP I've ever had.

My Chart is great. Dr. Chau gets back to me almost immediately and labs are promptly posted

Tom Chau is very responsive to my needs and in particular via e-mail through My Chart.

I came in with a respiratory condition that I thought might be walking phenomena or some type of bronchial condition . Doctor said it was Bronchitis and that it would be over in two days and gave me some codeine cough medicine and some benzonatate for the cough. These gave me some relief but even as of today I still have some of this cough and as I stressed it is hard for me to get a good nights sleep. [...] I should have been more proactive with the doctor and insisted on antibiotics due to my work and need to have gotten over this asap. He never really gave me a definitive time frame for when I would be better so I "assumed" incorrectly it would have been gone by the week end, which it was very definitely not.

Dr Chau is always respectful, professional, sensitive and fully communicative. He listens to my questions with patience and answers them tactfully and expertly. He takes the time to ask about changes in my personal life and takes these into consideration when giving advice.
