Biography

Holly Barker, M.D., knew as a toddler what she wanted to be when she grew up. She announced to her mother at the age of 2 that she was going to be a doctor.

At 8 years, she participated in a medical mentorship program and watched a video of open heart surgery. She was hooked and knew from that day forward she wanted to be a surgeon.

Dr. Barker received her medical degree at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. and completed her residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I.

"Surgery can be scary for patients. I try to approach every patient the way I would my own family: gently, confidently and with thorough explanations to erase as many question marks as possible," says Dr. Barker.

When not practicing medicine, she enjoys kayaking, reading, traveling and hiking with her dogs.
