Colette Brown, managing mirector of Providence Wee Care, announced in January, 2012, that it had successfully achieved Oregon Program of Quality (OPQ) Designation. The OPQ process enhances and recognizes the quality of child care programs, resulting in a state designation as a quality program.
“High-quality early childhood experiences benefit the individual child, the family, and the community,” says Brown. “Researchers have found that young children in high-quality care have better development of language and cognitive functioning, social skills, and emotional well-being. Children who receive high-quality early care do better in school and have higher earning potential as adults. The highest overall individual and societal return in our education efforts is found in early childhood.”
Studies have shown that investing in high-quality early child care and education pays multiple dollars for each dollar invested.
Providence Wee Care participated in the first OPQ statewide-cohort. To achieve the designation, Wee Care had to meet research-based standards for program quality, including collaborative family partnerships, child development and learning, highly qualified personnel, health and safety practices, developmental environments and effective administration and business practices.
“Providence has a high commitment to quality system-wide,” adds Brown. We are dedicated to excellence in our programs. Our services to children are among the best, and we were excited to have the opportunity to examine our practices against the state’s new quality rating and improvement metric. We have been very pleased with the results!”
Oregon Program of Quality is an initiative of EQUIP, the state’s innovative public-private partnership aimed at improving the quality of child care, strengthening the early care and education workforce and preparing Oregon's youngest children for success in school.
