Do you have a healthy relationship with food?

09/01/2011

Nutritionist and diabetes educator Juleeanna Andreoni sees first hand how people struggle with what is often called “disordered eating” in combination with diabetes. This can happen when we become so pre-occupied with our food and its contents, quantity, etc., that we lose the bigger picture, causing emotional distress.

Thankfully, we can cultivate a healthy relationship with food (yes, it’s possible!) with some of the following tips:

  • Practice focusing on the enjoyment of the food, vs. the # of carbs/calories, etc
  • Employ less judgment (“bad food”/”I shouldn’t be eating this!”) and more focus on your internal body cues (“what is really happening in my body when I eat this?”)
  • Prepare your meals and snacks with thoughtfulness and care.
  • Focus  on overall health and mindful attention to body and nutrition, rather than weight
  • Practice self-compassion
