Each year, Providence St. Vincent invites families and former patients of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to gather for an annual reunion. The event offers a chance for parents of these special babies to share experiences and advice with other parents of preemies. NICU doctors, nurses and technicians also enjoy the chance to reunite with some of the children they have cared for and to see how they have grown.
The NICU welcomed nearly 850 newborns in 2011. Since 1995, neonatal experts at Providence St. Vincent have been caring for extremely fragile newborns, as well as twins and multiple births. The NICU’s tiniest patient to date weighed barely a pound. The unit provides advanced respiratory support and surgical services to infants in need of special care.
In 2011, one out of every eight babies born in Oregon was delivered at Providence St. Vincent - more than 5,600 in all. Because of the high-risk obstetrical care offered at this facility, about 15 percent of all babies born at the hospital are admitted into the NICU.
