New moms think Providence BirthPlace is special.
“I’ve delivered at different hospitals in the area and appreciate how wonderful the care team at Providence BirthPlace is. For my family, Providence is the best.” – Tracey

As the only designated Baby-Friendly™ birth center in Jackson County, we understand how important the birthing environment is to a mother’s experience. Our staff cares for you with genuine warmth, dignity and respect. During your labor and the birth of your baby, your privacy, comfort and safety are of the utmost importance to us.

We help families feel at home.
At Providence BirthPlace, women labor, give birth and recover with their new babies in a private suite equipped with a special birthing bed. The room is furnished to make you, your family and your baby feel comfortable and at home throughout your entire stay. It also provides ready access to the latest medical equipment, just in case it’s needed. Your baby is cared for in your personal suite and stays with you and your family as much as you desire. In addition to the latest birthing room technology, your room is furnished with a private Jacuzzi tub, guest daybed, color flat screen TV, DVD player, dining area and rocking chair.

We honor your labor and delivery choices.
During your labor, a highly skilled nurse will assist you and your support person and provide information and reassurance. We want to meet your goal for a gentle birth. Pain management during childbirth is about patient choice and you may change your choice of pain management at any time. Early patient-controlled epidural anesthesia, IV pain medicine and coaching to help you breathe through your labor are all available.

We offer no-cost doula support.
A doula is a woman who is trained to provide continuous and nurturing physical, emotional and informational support to a mother during her labor and delivery. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. Providence BirthPlace doulas assist with births at no charge, depending on availability.

Couplet care yields a better care experience.
Providence BirthPlace is proud to offer couplet care, which means both mom and baby are cared for by the same nursing team for the duration of their stay. This familiarity leads to better communication and more personalized care.

High-tech care means the best for infants.
• Our wireless fetal monitor system allows your doctor and nurses to check on you from any computer, at any time. Without wires to worry about, you are free to leave your room and walk around the BirthPlace during labor.
• The BirthPlace surgical suite provides the necessary technology should a cesarean section be required.
• Highly trained physicians and nurses are on staff in the state-of-the-art special care nursery to care for babies who may have additional health needs, such as antibiotics or respiratory support.

We are committed to breastfeeding.
In 2000, UNICEF and the World Health Organization certified Providence BirthPlace as the 26th Baby-Friendly™ birth facility in the nation. This recognition is for leadership in establishing the highest standards possible for protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. All staff nurses are trained in breastfeeding and can offer guidance and support during your breastfeeding experience. Frequently asked questions about the Providence BirthPlace

I like Providence but should I be worried my baby will need a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit)?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the vast majority of pregnancies are normal – 85 to 95 percent. Only 10 percent of babies born in Oregon need a NICU. The likelihood of full term infant needing a NICU is very small; however, when a facility has a NICU the chances of you being separated from your baby for a minor condition are much greater. Our care team – nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatricians – is specially trained to care for babies within the Labor-Delivery-Recovery suite without having to separate mom and baby. Our special care nursery stands ready to treat infants’ special needs, including antibiotics, respiratory support, treatment for jaundice and many others. In the rare case when intensive care becomes necessary, the BirthPlace is equipped to stabilize a critically ill infant and arrange for immediate transfer.

If my baby is transferred to a higher level nursery, will we be separated?
If your baby does need to be transferred for intensive care we will do all we can to help you get well enough to go with your baby. Most women are reunited with their babies within 12-24 hours.

Isn’t Providence the smaller hospital in town?
Being smaller has its benefits. Our BirthPlace offers a more personal, nurturing environment than you could find in a larger hospital. Our care team is highly skilled and experienced. We have delivered thousands of babies and receive patient satisfaction scores averaging more than 95 percent.

Can I labor in the water at Providence?
Yes, we encourage you to use the private Jacuzzi tub in your suite. We have found it helps ease labor. The wireless fetal monitors even work underwater, so we can watch your baby while you soak.

Is there a place for my support person to sleep?
Yes, every BirthPlace suite has a guest day bed so your support person may stay with you and your baby at night.

What if I have trouble breastfeeding after I leave the BirthPlace?
We offer lactation support after the birth of your baby. Our weekly support group is the perfect way to connect with our lactation educator and other moms for answers to your questions and moral support.
