If you smoke, one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health is to quit smoking. Providence Health & Services supports you in this effort. The resources below can help you stop smoking for good.

Providence Smoking Cessation Classes
Based on the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking program, Providence Smoking Cessation classes are designed to help you quit smoking for good. You will learn a systematic approach to quitting through behavior modification techniques, coping skills, social support, and information on weight management, stress management and the role of medication.

Providence Free Smoking Cessation Support Group at Providence Portland Medical Center
Smoking cessation support group offers the opportunity to continue to learn more about coping with your struggles to be smoke free. Connect with others to share tips and ideas .

This group is intended to help those who have already or recently quit smoking and are looking for extra support. Registration is required. Group meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

Quit for Life®
This telephone-based program offers an alternative to smokers who want the support of a structured program but who cannot attend a group class. Quit for Life® provides 12 months of stop-smoking support, including scheduled telephone calls from a trained counselor, written materials and a toll-free help line. Depending on your health plan coverage, participants also may receive free or discounted nicotine-replacement therapy.

Drug therapies
A number of products, including varenicline (Chantix), bupropion (Zyban) and nicotine-replacement therapy, can reduce cravings and help addicted smokers to quit. Talk to your doctor about whether any of these pharmacologic options is appropriate for you.

Providence Health Plan members may have coverage for tobacco cessation medications. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications (patch, gum, etc.). You will need to get a prescription from your physician in order for the pharmacy to bill your insurance for over-the-counter medications.
