Welcome to our web page. The key to choosing a residency is finding the right environment, a place where you can thrive personally and develop into the physician you aspire to be. Ours is a rigorous yet collegial program. The education of residents and the care of patients are our highest priorities.
Our goal is simple: to provide you with the best possible clinical training in an academic and supportive environment conducive to learning. We achieve this through close mentorship, modeling professionalism and a commitment to our patients, and by setting high academic standards. We are proud of our program. We offer many unique opportunities that reflect our commitment to innovation. Look closely through our website, pay us a visit, and ask lots of questions.
For almost 20 years I have had the privilege of mentoring residents in our program and watching them become skilled, confident, compassionate physicians. Our teaching revolves around direct patient care. We focus on patient-centeredness, diagnostic reasoning, evidence-based decision making, systems thinking and value in health care. Our faculty is made up of some of the finest clinicians in the area, doctors who are fully engaged in teaching and who are strongly supported by the institution to do so.
At Providence St. Vincent Internal Medicine Residency, you will receive outstanding internal medicine training that prepares you for a career in primary care or hospital medicine, or for entering subspecialty fellowships. About one third of our graduates go on to competitive fellowship programs.
We also teach our residents to be great teachers through resident-teaching-resident workshops and resident-led conferences. We strive for a culture of inquiry, developing in our residents the skills necessary for lifelong, self-directed learning.
Our internal medicine residency at PSVMC brings together the best aspects of a university teaching hospital with the state-of-the-art facilities of a Top 100 community hospital. Throughout the entire medical center, you will find an atmosphere of collaboration, teamwork, respect and the primacy of the patient. We all learn from each other.
I look forward to sharing more about our program with you. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Welcome to the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Web Page. You will find a wealth of information here about our program, the Providence integrated health system, Portland, and the Pacific Northwest. St. Vincent's brings together an exceptional group of physicians within a state of the art facility, all converging around the commitment to medical education.
In the many years I've been engaged in graduate medical education, I've often heard it said that "it doesn't matter where you do your residency, you'll be a doctor regardless." While strictly speaking, this is an obvious statement, it misses an essential point and purpose of residency, and that is the defining philosophy you internalize about what it means to be a doctor. Every program has a unique personality, and your choice of residency will have an indelible impact on the physician you become. You will spend one to three formative years in residency, and the people you work with - your colleagues, your mentors, the patients who will share their life's stories with you - will be with you in some measure throughout your career. At Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, our program is based fundamentally on mentorship, professionalism, and an abiding commitment to one's patients. You will find the work environment here exceptionally collegial and supportive of your educational goals. You will work with some of the finest internists and specialists in the region, all of whom share that fundamental commitment to an academically rigorous education and to your development as a physician. After completing your residency at St. Vincent, you will have an outstanding clinical foundation for lifelong learning in whatever field of medicine you choose.
Despite the many challenges in health care, it is still a joy and a privilege to be a doctor. At Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, our goal is that the residency experience will always reflect that. We hope you will consider joining us.
