Pastoral Care for Patients and Families: Serving the Spiritual and Emotional Needs
At Providence Health & Services, we believe each patient deserves excellent care of mind and spirit as well as of body. Childbirth can bring a range of emotions, which may last for months. Our interdenominational Pastoral Services staff is available 24 hours a day to help you honor your baby’s birth and alleviate emotional and spiritual stress. You may wish to talk with a chaplain when:
You are undergoing a life change: The anticipation and birth of a baby can be a time of reflection for parents. As they consider raising a child, parents often examine their values, hopes and dreams. Chaplains provide emotional support and spiritual guidance during this important life event. They can also help parents explore ways of honoring and celebrating their baby’s birth.
You are dealing with grief: A difficult pregnancy, premature birth or decision to adopt a child can raise issues of unfulfilled hopes, dreams and expectations. Significant losses (that of a spouse, parent or relative; of a job; or of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or SIDS) can affect one’s ability to cope with day-to-day living. Chaplains can help families work through the grief process and ease the pain of these situations.
You are coping with a difficult diagnosis: Childbirth may bring uncertainty and stress, especially if the health of the mother and/or unborn baby is at risk. Pastoral support is available for patients and families facing new or difficult diagnoses.
Times and Appointments: Chaplains are available 24 hours a day to visit with you and your family while you are in the hospital. Individual appointments may also be made by calling the Pastoral Services office at your hospital:
