Healing Comforts of Home - Providence Guest Housing Campaign

Thank you to our friends at Windermere Real Estate and Windermere Foundation. Their support and encouragement has been key in helping us move our Guest Housing project forward.

Providence Portland Medical Center is increasingly becoming a regional destination for health care services. When patients and their families travel to Portland, they often find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings at a vulnerable and stressful time in their lives. Finding affordable and convenient lodging can be a major challenge. Providence Portland plans to address this need with a new guest house offering the comforts of home. Located just a block from the hospital, the facility will include 30 units in a peaceful and welcoming setting that offers opportunities for both privacy and fellowship.

Current situation
Gilroy Guest House, the hospital's current facility, is a small apartment complex at NE Hoyt Street and 47th Avenue that was built in 1955. Of the six units, one is dedicated to heart transplant patients. In 2012 Providence Portland had to turn away 248 reservation requests because of the guest house's limited capacity. Most of these requests were from patients and/or families for surgery, for critical care, and radiation/oncology. More than half of the reservations not met were requested from people living in Oregon.

Need
Providence Portland Medical Center patients and families need a temporary housing option that is close to the hospital and affordable. For example, patients undergoing stem cell transplant treatment typically reside in guest housing for three weeks at a time during the early part of their treatment, followed by weekly visits. Immunotherapy patients receive week-long treatments every six weeks for a year. A recent heart transplant patient resided at the current guest house for four months, then returned for follow-up care.

Solution
The recently completed Providence Portland Medical Center master campus plan includes a 20,000-square-foot, 30-unit guest housing facility located one block, easy walking distance, from the hospital. Shuttle service will be available for guests who want to be dropped off at the hospital or taken to the Hollywood transit center. The guest house will have a 24/7 secured entry, parking, and a Providence staff member on site at all times.

Benefits
The new, much roomier guest housing facility will reflect our Mission of caring for the poor and vulnerable. The demand for Providence Portland services will only increase from patients and families living in the various regions of Oregon and in surrounding states. We can ease their way by providing a comfortable, affordable place to stay.
