Breaking new ground in blood sugar control
The Portland Diabetes Project emerged from the interdisciplinary quality team that pioneered the Portland Protocol. Led by Anthony Furnary, M.D., the project comprises mostly specialists from the cardiovascular discipline of medicine: nurses, statisticians, a clinical studies supervisor, a diabetes patient educator and administrative staff.
“The Portland Diabetes Project team is dedicated to examining all angles of glucose control and designing patient education and quality initiatives based on our findings,” Dr. Furnary says. “Patients with diabetes who develop heart disease are often in the terminal stage of illness, but we believe much more still can be done to improve their outcomes from surgery.”
