Joe Bernard, Jr., past president of Providence Milwaukie Foundation
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Joe Bernard, Jr., Providence Milwaukie Foundation on June 18, 2012. Joe grew up and then raised his family in Milwaukie. He was mayor of Milwaukie in the early 1960s and is part of the community legacy that is Bernard's Garage.
Joe's involvement with Providence Milwaukie began 1979 when he joined the hospital's community advisory board and then transitioned to the foundation board when it was established in 1989. Joe's dedication to Providence Milwaukie Hospital and its Mission was strong and personal. His role as an adviser and fundraiser for the hospital is unparalleled. Joe served as president of the foundation from 1993 to 1995. He also spearheaded the campaign for building the medical/surgical wing in 1998, helped the board support the expansion of the hospital's Emergency Department in 2003 and along with his wife, Shirley, was a co-chair of the "One Baby at a Time" campaign.
Bernard is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Joseph, Edward, James and John, and daughters Joan McFadden and Kathleen Butler, in addition to 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family requests remembrances go to Providence Milwaukie Foundation dental health outreach fund.
