Cortical mapping

Cortical mapping is an inpatient procedure conducted prior to brain surgery for patients who have a grid or depth electrodes placed inside the brain.  During the procedure, a physician stimulates each electrode placed within the patient’s brain individually, to confirm which areas are causing seizures.  The result is a "map" of the brain’s seizure focus areas, which allows the surgeon to know precisely which part or parts of the brain to remove during surgery.
