Providence Seaside Hospital expands Telemedicine program to include hospitalists

December 17, 2014

Patients at Providence Seaside Hospital continue to receive the benefits of Providence’s telemedicine program, which is about to expand to include access to board-certified hospitalists in the evening and overnight hours. Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the care of patients in the hospital.

The field of telemedicine – connecting patients to experts via secure video technology – is growing in academic centers, health systems, private physician practices and here on the north coast at Providence Seaside Hospital. In 2011, Providence Seaside was a pilot site for Providence Telestroke Network, which connects possible stroke patients with a stroke neurologist within the first few minutes of their arrival at the hospital. In that same year, specialists in Anchorage, Alaska with an e-ICU virtual monitoring screen treated patients in Providence Seaside’s intensive care unit. With the great success of these initiatives, telemedicine is now expanding into the hospitalist program, covering the hours from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with a virtual physician.

“Providence Seaside Hospital began the hospitalist program in 2008 and has found this to be a key component in caring for our hospital patients,” said Michael Blauer, chief executive Providence Seaside Hospital. “I believe that having a telehospitalist available throughout the night will result in more active and timely management of our patients. It will also alleviate the time and stress put on the patient and their families with quicker treatment and care.”

Studies conclude that hospitalist-attended patients have better medical outcomes, lower costs and shorter lengths of stay in the hospital. Not only do hospitalists offer the patient on-site access to a physician, but hospitalists also are familiar with key departments and individuals within the hospital, allowing for prompt connections with other health care personnel.
