Whole-genome mapping offers patients innovative cancer diagnosis

Previously reserved for researchers and the very rich, a next generation technique aims to improve treatment and outcomes for patients at the clinical level. 

Patrick Soon-Shiong, a visionary doctor and entrepreneur who has made whole-genome mapping a priority, will partner with Providence to offer patients the next generation of DNA mapping of tumors starting in the fall.

“The immediate and individual benefit for patients is we find out what mutations are present in your tumor,” said Dr. Walter Urba, research director at the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center at Providence Cancer Center in Portland.
