Conquer Cancer Foundation honors Providence for excellence in clinical trials research

June 25, 2014

Providence Cancer Center is being honored nationally for its commitment to high-quality clinical trials programs. The recognition comes from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, or ASCO. Providence is one of just eight programs in the U.S. to be chosen.

As a recipient of the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Clinical Trials Participation Award, Providence Oncology and Hematology Care Clinic, part of Providence Cancer Center, is being honored for its contribution to the improvement of cancer care through clinical research in a community-based setting.

Providence enrolled nearly 600 patients in clinical studies last year, and currently has close to 90 open trials.

Oncologist Alison Conlin, M.D. accepted the honor on behalf of her Providence Cancer Center colleagues at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

Conlin, medical director of Providence High Risk Breast Clinic, said the recognition further validates Providence’s commitment to serving patients through its immunotherapy research, as well as direct care.

“The way we advance treatment and help people survive for longer and cure more people is by testing new drugs or new combinations of drugs,” Conlin said. “One of our primary goals at Providence is to provide opportunities for as many patients as possible to have access to the latest research.”

Providence was selected, in part, because of its commitment to help patients overcome barriers to enrolling in clinical trials.

“The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology is pleased to honor Providence Cancer Center with the Clinical Trials Participation Award for providing patients with access to high-quality clinical research that furthers our progress against cancer,” said W. Charles Penley, M.D., FASCO, chair of the Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors.

The Clinical Trials Participation Award is funded through the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO with the support of the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups.
