Providence Cancer Center welcomes executive medical director

October 08, 2013
Doug Walta, M.D.
Chief executive, Clinical Programs, Physician Strategy, Outreach and Diversity

I am pleased to announce that Kevin Olson, M.D., has accepted the position of executive medical director of Providence Cancer Center. He began transitioning into this role Oct. 1 and will be on board full time Oct. 14.

Dr. Olson replaces Calvin Harrison, who now leads our cancer program at the system level. As an oncologist Dr. Olson will be credentialed to practice at Providence, but will focus his time and expertise on growing our cancer program throughout the region. He will work closely with Harrison and Walter Urba, M.D., Ph.D., director of cancer research.

Medicine has been part of Dr. Olson’s entire life. His father, Donald Olson, M.D., was a physician who practiced at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, served as PSVMC medical staff president and medical director of Providence Health Plan, and helped found Providence Medical Group.

Dr. Kevin Olson began his career in medicine with one of his first jobs – as a transportation orderly at PSVMC. At the time, the only people allowed on the oncology units were clinicians, family members and transportation orderlies. He says that is where he lost his fear of being around people with cancer.

Dr. Olson received his undergraduate degree from University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, and completed fellowships in hematology and medical oncology and bone marrow transplantation at OHSU.

Since 1996, Dr. Olson practiced with Compass Oncology, where he served as the group's chief medical officer and former president. He also has been an active leader in US Oncology, a national cancer practice-management company, where he served on its National Policy Board and co-chaired its Practice Quality and Efficiency Committee.

I am honored to tell you Dr. Olson was drawn to Providence Cancer Center because of our very high quality standards and our Mission. Please join me in welcoming him to Providence.
