Updates from the Providence Medford Medical Center Laboratory

Outstanding lab accreditation results
Earlier this month, representatives of the College of American Pathologists performed the bi-annual Laboratory Accreditation Survey at Providence Medford Medical Center. The survey included the clinical laboratory, anatomic pathology, point of care testing and blood gas testing in the respiratory therapy department. Of the 1,216 specific requirements reviewed our lab demonstrated more than 99 percent compliance. Areas achieving 100 percent compliance and demonstrating outstanding performance included anatomic pathology, hematology and urinalysis, coagulation, microbiology and laboratory leadership. The survey team leader, Guang Fan, M.D., Ph.D., commended the laboratory for its outstanding performance and dedication to supporting a high level of patient care.

Lab management and services
With over 40 years of laboratory leadership experience in both community hospitals and major academic medical centers, Interim Laboratory Manager Charles Bartels, BA, MS, MT (ASCP) has instituted best practices throughout the southern Oregon service area. Based on input from physicians, the following new systems have been put into place:
  • Tracking system for turnaround time has been implemented to ensure timely reporting is consistently achieved for all referring physicians.
  • A more efficient protocol to expedite specialty consultations from our Providence pathologists.
  • A hard copy reporting system for those physicians requesting physical printouts of reports instead of delivery through EHR.
If you wish to contact Charles regarding concerns or questions, call 541-732-6748 or email.
