Telestroke comes to Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center

December 09, 2011
Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center has joined Providence Telestroke Network to provide after-hours acute stroke care. Through an advanced video system, Providence Telestroke Network allows stroke neurologists from Providence Brain and Spine Institute to be “in the room” with PWFMC emergency physicians.

The stroke neurologist can review patient records and diagnostic results, perform a full examination and consult with on-site clinicians to help determine the best treatment.

Telestroke complements the hospitals existing interdisciplinary stroke program working with Oregon Neurology, PC, for day-time physician coverage, hospitalists, rehabilitation services and discharge planning. “The hospital should be able to care for most patients experiencing stroke here, close to home,” says Tom Phipps, M.D., associate medical director for the PWFMC stroke program.

Providence Telestroke Network was recently awarded a $253,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand services to eastern and central Oregon.
