More Hours, More Help for Families; Providence St. Vincent Medical Center Expands Drop-In Child Care Service
February 07, 2011
PORTLAND, Ore. – It's a one-of-a-kind service for families juggling child care and hospital appointments – and now, My Little Waiting Room will be available to help even more people at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
The drop-in child care center is expanding its hours, and now will be open 40 hours a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. The center cares for young children as parents or siblings receive treatment in the hospital or visit with patients.
The additional afternoon hours will help meet the need for child care services after 3 p.m., when children are out of school and many families schedule hospital visits and appointments. The expansion is made possible through the support of Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation's Board of Trustees and community donations.
“Our donors continue to be supportive of this important service and were inspired to contribute to expanding the hours,” said Dick Clark, Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation executive director.
The center is operated by Volunteers of America Oregon. It opened April 5, 2010. In the first 10 months of operation, My Little Waiting Room provided 5,500 hours of child care during 3,000 child visits.
The service meets a need experienced by many parents. “I used your facility and for the first time in almost four years I was able to go to my treatment without my daughter,” said Gillianne Fields. “We both loved it! I got to relax and see my doctor and not worry about an anxious and bored child. Your staff was competent, friendly and welcoming.”
“We are proud to offer this groundbreaking service to better serve our patients,” said Alex Jackson, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center associate administrator. “My Little Waiting Room clearly eases the way for parents who do not have available child care. We're gratified that we're able to extend the hours so that more families can be served.”
My Little Waiting Room is offered to patients free of charge, with a suggested donation of $5 per family per visit to help defray some of the service's costs.
