Charles Davis, MSW, a twenty-year disability advocate and administrator, is the Transition Services Coordinator for the Institute on Disability and Development at OHSU. Susan Labhard, MSN, RN has worked at Portland’s Shriners Hospital for Children for over 27 years and currently is the Transitions Nurse Specialist, heading the program to assist children and youth in their transition to adulthood.
A big part of the transition journey for youth with disabilities, is learning to find friendship and love outside of the family. Susan and Chuck will discuss the often overlooked topic of safe “relationships.” Here caregivers will learn the importance of socialization and providing youth who experience disability with appropriate information on the development of healthy relationships.
Increase confidence around this topic through discussion that will include:
- Exploration of methods to teach youth with special needs about making friends and developing healthy relationships.
- Useful references and resources for teaching an individual with a disability about safe friendships/ relationships
- Resource tables with information regarding transition to adulthood will be available beginning at 5:30
