This two-day workshop will provide clinicians with enhanced evaluation and intervention skills in the sensory treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This dynamic learning opportunity will aide therapists in the fine tuning of their clinical reasoning, analysis skills and intervention methods through a variety of learning modalities.

Who Can Attend

This course will benefit Occupational Therapists and Assistants, Physical Therapists and Assistants, and Speech Language Pathologists.

Through video analysis and live demonstrations, therapists will have the opportunity to observe and problem solve the nuances of sensory processing intervention, attachment relationship intervention and arousal-based management for children with Autism. Participants must have a working knowledge of the behavioral manifestations of ASD and a beginning understanding of sensory processing theory.

Registration Fee:

The two-day registration fee of $450 per person covers continental breakfast, refreshments, certificate and course materials.

Receive a $50 early-bird registration discount if you register online or registration is postmarked by March 18, 2016.

Refund Policy:

Full refunds less a $50 administrative fee will be granted if cancellation is requested by March 25. No refunds will be made after that date unless the course is cancelled by Providence Rehabilitation Services, in which case full refunds will be issued.

Contact Hours:

This course will qualify for 15 continuing education hours for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists in Oregon. Certificates of attendance will be issued to all participants completing the CEU requirements.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Correctly identify five sensory contributions to behavioral challenges and emotional dysregulation.
  • Correctly identify two aspects of relationship that are used as therapeutic tools in the treatment of autism.
  • Correctly implement three treatment techniques and/or sensory strategies to assist clients with autism in modulating arousal and learning self-regulation.
  • Accurately identify three sensory components that contribute to motor dysfunction in autism.
  • Develop a repertoire of 5-6 sensory strategies to enhance motor skills through alteration of the environment and therapeutic intervention of the autistic client.

About the Speaker

KimBarthel

Kim Barthel, BMR, OTR, is an author, consultant, occupational therapist, and co-owner of Relationship Matters, a company dedicated to providing professional and personal growth workshops. Kim is a Neuro-Developmental Treatment-OT Instructor and a teacher of Sensory Processing Intervention, with post-graduate study in neuro-sciences and a range of complementary healing practices. Kim proficiently blends and bridges up-to-date science of connection and attachment theory with intuitive aspect of the therapeutic process.
