What happens next?

Once you join the registry, you’ll be on the list until your 61st birthday. You could be contacted at any time if you happen to be a match for a patient. If you’re a match (very rare), 75% of donors are asked to give blood stem cells, which is a process similar to giving platelets or plasma. 25% of donors are asked to give marrow, which is taken under a 1-2 hour outpatient procedure performed under anesthesia. Through either procedure, donors regenerate what they donate in a few weeks.
