Are you at increased risk for stroke? Do you know the signs that you or someone else is having a stroke? Get the answers to these questions, plus a stylish, red hair streak at this year’s Streaks for Stroke event with Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center.
Experts will be on hand to help you assess your risk of having a stroke. The leading cause of stroke, high blood pressure, affects one in four adults – some 50 million people in the U.S. Providence experts will have tips on lowering blood pressure and reducing other stroke risk factors.
After you assess your stroke risk, show your support for stroke awareness by getting a red, clip-in hair extension.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death among Americans. More than 90 percent of Americans don’t know the signs of a stroke. And every minute a stroke is left untreated, millions of brain cells are killed.
The “FAST” test is used to teach people to recognize the signs of a stroke:
F – FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the mouth or face droop?
A – ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Can one arm not be raised?
S – SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a sentence. Can he or she repeat it correctly without slurring the words?
T – TIME: If the person exhibits any problems with these, it's time to call for emergency help.
