Acute and chronic pain

Also known as: Pain, chronic and acute, persistent pain

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. This means that there is both a physical sensation and an emotional experience that are a normal part of any pain process.

Acute pain is defined as a normal and time-limited response to trauma or other processes related to tissue damage.

Persistent pain (or chronic pain) is experienced beyond the normal time of tissue healing, or more than three months, and can also occur in the absence of any trauma or tissue damage.
